Porcelain Hair Studio is located in Downtown Huntington Beach, where the old flower shop was, right next to Cucina Alessa. Get your hair done then enjoy strolling downtown or walk all the way to the beach!
Recently, I was invited to experience some Porcelain-style pampering and I had my hair blown out, my nails done and I got to hang out with some cool gals. The ambiance is homey and cool and the stylists are all friendly and professional.

Slapfish. Remember the food truck? Well, it’s parked permanently in Huntington Beach now. The popular gourmet food truck is now a little restaurant dubbed a “Modern Seafood Shack”— Slapfish opened recently at what used to be a bagel place in a local strip mall in Surf City.
The media preview was a meeting of friends and fans. Foodies, bloggers, other chefs were there to support owners Jethro and Andrew. And did I mention, the food was delicious! Find out more at www.slapfishsocal.com

The other night I had the opportunity to visit Heritage Hill Historic Park in Lake Forest and let me tell you it was like stepping back in time. I toured the Serrano Adobe House, the Harvey Bennett Ranch House, St. George’s Episcopal Church and El Toro Grammar School. A knowledgeable docent led the tour and because I like history a lot, it was very interesting to me. But even if history’s not your thing, the park is well maintained and they’ve got a cool event coming up on Dec. 10-11, 2011.
Candlelight Tour
December 10, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Two enchanting evenings with luminaria lit paths, historic buildings aglow with holiday lighting, strolls through restored historical buildings adorned in period décor and staffed by our docents, Victorian carolers, live entertainment in each building, storytellers, visits with Santa, refreshments.

Incidentally, refreshments for the special preview were provided by Taco Maria, the Tailgate Truck and Meringue Bakeshop. Thank you to OC PARKS for hosting.

I attended a Straight Talk event hosted by Invisalign. It was a fun and informative evening. Getting straighter teeth has never been easier. Find out how it works. The highlight of the evening was meeting an actual mom and daughter who used Invisalign for different reasons but with both amazing results. Oh yeah, and there was that dude from Dancing with the Stars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmFAFPr1Ez4 (Thanks to Domestic Frugalista)
I attended the spring fundraiser for Olive Crest foundation. It was called Harvesting Hope and featured a live auction, wine tasting and a cooking demo by Top Chef’s Chef Fabio Viviani. It was a great event for an even greater cause — helping less fortunate kids!

Met the actual Tillamook Cheese loaf during the Loaf Love Tour stop at Costa Mesa in March. Tillamook hosted a mini-grilled cheese cook-off competition which was eventually won by the Barone Family aka Glitterful Felt. We sampled LOTS of cheese and it was delicious!
Tillamook has been around a long time. I read that over 100 years ago, several local creameries formed the Tillamook County Creamery Association in Tillamook, Oregon to ensure the highest quality, most consistent products possible, and the collective well-being of local farmers. According to the company website: “Today, it’s a cooperative of approximately 110 dairy farming families, many which are third-generation co-op members. The co-op makes the No. 1 selling brand of natural chunk cheese in the West, in addition to offering a variety of other cheeses and dairy products.” Even cooler is that the company’s profits go back to the farmers.
Recently, my kids and I had the pleasure of dining with fellow bloggers Kara Noel of Elis Lids, Deb Lavdas of Debbie in the OC and Caryn Bailey of Rockinmama and their adorable families at Ztejas Southwestern Grill in South Coast Plaza (near the carousel!)
We had a grand old time — we enjoyed the bottomless chips and three salsas (the cheese dip was addicting), cast iron skillet dumplings, and grilled shrimp and guacamole tostada bites. We samples various quesadillas and gorged on the cornbread as well so that by the time it was time to order our entrees we were stuffed! I had to take home nearly 3/4 of my steak salad w/ mango chili dressing (not sure exactly what the name of the dish was but it was delicious).
Meanwhile, the kids had the usual kids’ menu offerings including chicken strips, chicken tacos, quesadillas, and yes, mac and cheese. But what made the kids meals different (besides the simple yet colorful presentations), were the very fresh and flavorful ingredients! Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill offers innovative menu items inspired by culinary influences from Louisiana, Texas, California and Mexico. Delicioso!
I had the honor of meeting Food Network Stars Iron Chef Michael Symon and Anne Burrell at Zov’s Bistro in Tustin for a special fundraiser for the James Beard Foundation, a non-profit based in New York that serves to promote the culinary arts.
Watching Chef Anne cook her Chicken Milanese with Escarole Salad and Pickled Red Onions and Chef Symon make his Crispy Gnocchi with Morels and Spring Peas was definitely entertaining. Chef Anne was breezy and funny. Chef Michael was thoughtful and spontaneous - his distinct laughter filled the room. It was infectious.
After the cooking demos, the audience enjoyed the spread prepared by Chef Zov, whose brainchild this entire “culinary concert” was… including the two dishes prepared by the guest chefs. The food was scrumptious, the company precious — as the chefs met and mingled their adoring fans, including a 10 year old girl, who convinced her father to buy her a ticket and a gentleman whose wife had given him a ticket for Christmas.
Wine was provided by Edward Sellers. Sponsorship was provided by Melissa’s World Variety Produce and Square Root Designs. Zov’s has restaurants in Tustin, Irvine and Newport Coast.
